Wedding Invitation Design | Allison & Chip

Happy Friday, lovelies! Since I'm on the How-I-Design-Wedding-Invites train I thought I'd share one of my favorites.

Allison contacted me a couple months ago looking for some hand lettered, watercolor invitations. After we spoke on the phone, we discussed her colors and flowers because she wanted a garland of flowers as a border on the invitations as well as the RSVP card. She sent over a couple of screenshots of flower arrangements that she liked and we even shared a Pinterest board where she pinned her favorite invites for some helpful inspiration on my end!

After I sorted out the colors and I got Allison's verbiage, I went to work! I started with doing the watercolor lettering. I haven't worked with watercolor in quite a while, so I ended up re-learning how to handle the paint and the importance of layers. For those who are interested, I used Strathmore Watercolor Paper, Winsor & Newton watercolors (In the TUBES. It makes all the difference, y'all.) with a badger hair brush.

When it came to the flowers, I made sure to keep Allison in the loop at all times. I wanted to make sure each step was exactly what she wanted - for her excitement, but also because watercolor is very time consuming.

Once I painted the other layers on the flowers and added the details, I scanned in my painting and put them in Photoshop and erased, erased, and erased some more. Once I pieced everything together in Photoshop (#allthelayers), I sent Allison some WIP screenshots. We made a couple of minor changes, and I sent her the final PDFs!

Allison ended up printing on A7 & A2 textured, white, matte stock. The textured paper really sold the whole watercolor feel. It looked like I had hand painted all of the invitations! They paired great with the green and white envelopes. Allison ended up hand lettering all her invitation (and save the date!) envelopes and compliment the design of the rest of the suite. She is super talented! Here are some wonderful shots of the whole suite together, photographed by the one and only Brittany Arias! Check her out, at Love Be Photography and fall in love with all her amazing photos.

This project was a joy and a (fun!) challenge and I loved every minute of it! I've fallen back in love with watercolors, too. :D As always, if you have any custom design needs, hit me up on my Contact Page and let's get something started today!

Wedding Design | Emma & Connor

Hello awesome humans! For the past couple months I have been working with a friend on designing a few things for her wedding. Wedding invitations and RSVP cards, programs & signage. The whole kit & caboodle! I couldn't make the McVey's Wedding this past weekend since I was in the ER, but from what I've seen it looked like an amazing time! Right now the happy newlyweds are touring Ireland on their honeymoon! Another reason why their green and gold theme is so fitting. :)

I started with Emma's programs. She wanted to highlight the important information in modern, no frills lettering. She made it clear the design had to be fiance approved! ;) Her color was green and we decided that she should go with a standard A7 paper size. Since she knew she wanted green envelopes, I suggested we keep it clean and just go with green text on white paper.

Once we laid out the rest of the details I drew out the lettering first in a Moleskin with my trusty Micron, then scanned and digitized in Illustrator.

sketch.JPG

I laid the text Emma had given me and then sent her screenshots of each round of designs and made changes as needed until we got the final!

I got Emma the PDFs to print herself in Atlanta. She printed them on a heavy, matte textured stock then backed them with gold paper so they looked extra fancy. That paired with the previously mentioned Lockwood Green A7 envelopes and Shimmer Gold A2 envelopes for the RSVP cards made for a lovely Invitation Suite!

A couple weeks after I finished designing the Invitations, RSVP cards and Information Cards, I got another email from Emma asking about designing the programs. Of course I obliged. :) Just like the invitations, she got me the verbiage and I laid it out and sent over screenshots until we decided on a file. We also threw in some signage for the reception. Everything looked great altogether and Emma was a dream client! She even helped me out and wrote some kind words about her experience over on my testimonials page.

To complete the green & gold awesomeness, Emma bought one of my customized Etsy cards to give Connor. This wedding was so personalized and special.

Lastly, and I hope Emma hasn't gotten this far, here is my present for them! Sorry if this is ruined, but I'll get it to you next time I'm in Atlanta! Love this couple and I hope they're having a fantastic time on their honeymoon!

In conclusion, I obviously had such a fun time creating everything with Emma! She was a joy to work with. As always, if you have any design needs feel free to contact me and we can get going on your project!

My Little Red Book

Hello lovely people! So, I am getting back on the blogging train and I figured I would catch some of you up on a project that I started this summer. I call it #mylittleredbook for obvious reasons...

When I was in New York I picked up a small, red Moleskin notebook at the MOMA shop 1. Because I love a good Moleskin and 2. Because the notebook I brought with me was falling apart. It ended up becoming a project I love. I had one day to myself where I was able to wander the city (probably my favorite day from that trip) and I ended up in Bryant Park. I got some soft serve and sat at a picnic table and just people watched. It was a perfect day out so I whipped out my fresh Moleskin and lettered "Bryant Park" with some floral doodles. I had such a great response from my fellow Instagrammers that I started lettering the places I was visiting in the city - Central Park, The East River, etc.

After I came home, I decided I would keep it going. Every trip I went on I made sure to bring along My Little Red Book (and of course my trusty Micron). This Moleskin has travelled along with me to all these different places and has become like a little passport, reminding me of all the fun memories I had during my visit. It's quickly filling up. I guess I'll have to get another one when I reach the end!

For those interested on how I lettered these doodles, I used my favorite Micron (Pigma Graphic 1). I love this pen because it is felt tipped and retains a good point when doing details. I also think it's the perfect thickness. I drew out the words - modern calligraphy style - then faked it a little, by adding thickness to the downstrokes. From there I added the little embellishments on the letters, like an extra stroke, dots, or both! After the letters are done, I add swashes, flowers, or whatever the environment around me looks like. I pretty much fill in every nook and cranny of the page I'm working on. From there, I just awkwardly take a photo of it and IG it! I've had a bunch of people ask me what products I use and I'm happy to share! If y'all like the play-by-plays I'll start including more of them. And be sure to tag me in your lettering adventures!

Follow along with me on IG with my #mylittleredbook hashtag! Thanks for reading & stay beautiful!

Don't Let the Muggles Get You Down

I know I know. I'm going on 10 months of blogging and I have yet to post anything Harry Potter related. SHAME. Anyways, I finally have my first HP print. It's by Ron in book 3 in his birthday letter to Harry while he is staying with the Dursleys the summer before his third year. I was just relistening to it recently and I found the quote both hilarious and true. So, if you need some reminders on how to get through a day with all those pesky muggles, this print is for you. Office Chalk Round 2

So, my office is amazing and I have a chalkboard wall! I haven't done anything to it since I started at Adams Outdoor Advertising last year and I was long overdue to do something new. So, yesterday I sketched a bit and came up with this!

This is actually part of a quote from Tuesdays with Morrie, silly enough. (Found on Pinterest) I thought it was great and applied to not only a creative in the office, but everyone here. We all contribute to the process and experience and this is important to remember and reflect on as we tackle a new project.

"The way you get meaning into your life is to devote yourself to loving others, devote yourself to your community around you, and devote yourself to creating something that gives you purpose and meaning.-Morrie himself

Someday, Someday, Maybe

Hello you beautiful people!

I recently finished the novel Someday, Someday, Maybe by Lauren Graham. For those of you who have never seen Gilmore Girls or Parenthood, she is a wonderful actress (and writer). Her book is about a young aspiring actress, Franny Banks, who lives in New York City who has set a deadline for her budding career. It is a hilarious and touching story. Graham really gives us insight on the struggle of the unknown in all 20-somethings lives and I highly recommend it.

There was one line towards the end that stuck out to me. Dan, Franny's roommate, is giving her a pep talk about how her filofax (this was set in the mid 90s) is a reflection of how much progress she has made for her goals.

"Maybe you haven't accomplished what you want yet," Dan says. "But what that book shows is how you've kept filling up the pages. Quantity becomes quality by itself, like the story says. You don't even have to believe in your success. Just keep at it, like the fictional Franny, keep filling up the pages, and something's bound to happen."

This quote resonated with me because I am a list-maker and planner. I have always kept records and calendars of everything I have to do for the week, month, year. I loved that during Graham's novel, we got to see scans of Franny's filofax. Sometimes, keeping a planner is just a means to an end, it keeps track of what you have to remember and that is all. But in actuality, it reminds you of all that you have accomplished, like Dan is telling Franny. As long as I keep filling up the pages, I know I will keep growing and moving forward in all aspects of my life. I hope some of you respond to this quote like I have! As always, this print is available for purchase on my Etsy Shop.

You Suck Card

Over the 4th of July weekend I was at dinner with some friends and someone mentioned how were going to send a friend a snarky letter. She said that it would be awesome to mail them a card that said 'you suck' on the front. And then we all decided I should actually make it! So, if you know anyone who you love, but sometimes get a little frustrated with...this card is for them. Available on my Etsy shop!

Leslie Knope Cards

Along with most of the country, i am trying to hold myself together because one of my most quoted and beloved shows has ended. First, can we talk about that? I feel cheated. Yes, we did get two episodes a night this 'season', but it only lasted what feels like a month! That is not enough for me, I'm sorry. Guess they have to get the whole cast back together and shoot some more eps.

***SPOILERS AHEAD, SCROLL QUICKLY***

Secondly, let's chat about what happened. List forming...

  1. Typhoon + Craig 4EVR
  2. Garry made it to 100?! Also, Mayor Gergich for life. Literally. (I Chris'ed and didn't even mean to.)
  3. You can totally see April is preggo in Donna's flash forward.
  4. I wish I got to know Ben & Leslie's kids better.
  5. I bursted into tears when Chris & Anne showed up.
  6. RIP Jean Ralphio...hahaha.
  7. Who was President?! Ben or Leslie?! Or were they both at some point?! AHH.
  8. Ron's perfect job.
  9. Other than that, I was shocked I only cried once. Hell, for the HIMYM finale I started crying before I heard this live for the last time. They kept it light and I am thankful they gave us a peek at the rest of their lives after they left the P&R office. Thanks for the laughs.
  10. I wonder what happened to these people: Bobby Newport, Jennifer Barclay, Shauna Malwae Tweep, Crazy Ira & The DOUUUUCHE, Orin, Joan Callamezzo, Dennis Feinstien. Please feel free to ponder with me and comment below.

Lilly & Josh

Happy Monday, everyone! Hope y'all had a great weekend! Mine sure was productive. I think I am working on about 7 different commissions, some Etsy sales, plus I had a photoshoot. Whew!

The aforementioned photoshoot was an Engagement Session for two of my good friends from SCAD. They are both ultra-talented, beautiful & extremely goofy people who are getting married this summer!

We decided to head to Tybee Island and just walk around and shoot whatever we felt like and ended up taking almost 700 photos - 90% to be used for blackmail someday. I also hand-lettered their names and added it on the first photo! Please feast your eyes on a few of the photos of amazing models who call me a friend. You two are awesome, can't wait for the wedding!

Thanks for reading & stay beautiful.

Valentines Day + Instagram Project

Hey guys! Hope you all had a great January! Tomorrow is February, which means everything will will be pink and red. Let me add to the madness. I actually made two collections!

The first is some hand lettered, ombre cards. These have some heartfelt and sarcastic sayings for that special someone in your life. I like these because they can be used for people other than a significant other. AND they can be used year round. Bonus.

The second is one just because I am obsessed with a new font. Burford. Ugh, I love it so much. It was on uber sale and comes with so many variations and extras. I couldn't help myself.

I have also decided to do a fun little Instagram Project! For two weeks (until Valentine's Day) I will hand letter a name a day. The names I letter will be up to y'all! Just follow me then tag someone you love & why on today's 'Who do you love?' IG post to enter (or any #whodoyouloveproject IG photo). This does not have to be a significant other; it can be your best friend, your grandmother, your cat (Well, maybe not your cat...). I think Valentine's day should be about celebrating all love, not just romantic love. Spread that love, y'all. As always, these are up on my Etsy.

Dr. Who Quote

Hello, everyone! I hope you all had a fantastic weekend!

So, a couple weeks ago I got an Etsy custom request from a college friend, Lauren. She asked for a hand lettered quote from Dr. Who, a show I do not watch (yet). I think I just saw the virtual wide-eyed stares and heard 'what?!'s from across the interwebs. Do not fear, Whovians, it is on my very long to watch list! I really like this quote and I think it is something people have probably thought before but never really said out loud. I also tried my hand at some styling/staging/production design and I really enjoyed the added physical image, so I will be making an effort to start including those as well. It's so much fun just going around my apartment and grabbing random Chotchkies. Y'all will probably see a bunch of gnomes because I have weird obsessions. It will probably turn into a game of I Spy.

Cutting the rambling, I think this is pretty self explanatory, but if you would like this print, it is up on my Etsy. Make sure to thank Lauren for it's existence! And, as always, give me a shout either on Etsy or through my contact page if you want something custom for yourself!

Ashley's Maternity Photos

My coworker, Ashley, is due in less than two weeks now and she wanted some maternity shots before her little girl comes along. Her nursery is decorated in pink & grey so we stuck to that theme in her room then ventured outside (into the cold!) for a few shots like this first one. Ignore the goose bumps and focus on the baby bump. Wink.

A Very Pi Phi Christmas

Every year around Christmas time, the alumnae of Alabama Alpha Chapter of Pi Beta Phi (Birmingham-Southern College) have a little reunion. We always order some t-shirts or sweatshirts to remember the occasion. This year, I volunteered to take over this project as an excuse to design the sweatshirts myself!

The lovely people over at Geneologie put my design on some awesome Comfort Color sweatshirts and I got mine in the other day! I think they turned out great and I am thinking I need to start screen printing some more hand lettering on other things (totes and bags, perhaps?). Just another thing to add to the long design to-do list. I think 2015 is gonna be a good one. :)

I hope all of you had an amazing New Year! Thanks for reading & stay beautiful!

Holiday Decorations

Hello all! I hope you are enjoying this holiday season because I know I am! I grew up in a household of people who are allergic to everything; myself included. So getting a live Christmas tree this year was a pretty big deal. The weekend before Thanksgiving (super early, I know) Sam and I had some friends visiting and we all went to Home Depot and the rest is history!  I made sure to snag the bottom of the tree our guy cut of for us to eventually make an ornament from.

Thanks to Target, I dropped some cash and got the rest of my decorations. You can see in the photos below that our vines got some ornament love along with the tree. I also ended up doing some crafty hand lettering on some other things like recycled bottles and made a makeshift mantle with some felt holly around some paper cut lettering I did for my apartment a while back. Check out the photos below for more!

Safe travelling this holiday season! I'll be out there with all of you.

Stay beautiful & thanks for reading!

Christmas Greetings

Hello all! Sorry it has been a while since my last post but I have been super busy working on some fun and exciting things! One of which is my Etsy Shop!

I've had a bunch of commissions from some of the projects I have posted on here and questions on when and if I will be selling stuff online, so here it is! For future use, just click the 'SHOP' button in my top navigation.

I would also like to introduce my Christmas Greetings Collection. These are some of the phrases I chose (from a very long list of ideas) to hand letter and digitize for the holidays. I think my personal favorite is the 'Merry Christmas ya Filthy Animal' one, but I am biased since I have the sweatshirt.

If you see something you like visit my Etsy! I have the prints, card sets and individual cards on sale as well as some stuff from my past posts.

As always, thanks for reading & stay beautiful!

Thanksgiving

It is that time of year, y'all! I hope everyone is prepared for the travelling, the crazy weather and the consumption of food.

I was raised that every gift requires a thank you note. I don't think I could possibly think about how many thank you notes I've written in my life. Lets just say a lot... It is one thing that I am proud my mother taught me and that I continue today.

For this Thanksgiving I want to give back to y'all and do another giveaway! I hand lettered a couple 'thank you' phrases below and if you comment below (or on Instagram or Facebook) write/tag someone in your life who you are thankful for & why and which print is your favorite and you might just get it! If you are interested in buying a print for $15 please contact me here or PM me on Facebook! I'm working on my Etsy site soon, guys. Sooooon.

Also, thank you from the bottom of my heart for keeping up with me and my work. It means the world to me! I hope all of you have a very safe holiday weekend!

Thanks for reading & stay beautiful!

XOXO,

P
